Driving south Italy

Updated: Jul 26, 2022

Train to Rome, rent a car, get a 6-hour train to Bari and finally arrive.

Last year I was fortunate to go to Puglia with my best friend Sophie from Norway. I write about this trip because we didn't know we would arrive at the place of our dreams and where we would experience the best culinary and traveling experiences of our lives.

Sophie is a great planner, so I let her take the lead; the only thing you have to do, she said, was "honey, you have to drive."

We arrived in Bari and had to rent an automatic car; kind of embarrassing but none of us knew how to drive a manual. I am from Mexico. There was a widespread trend in driving automatic cars, so the adventure started.

She planned all the destinations wisely, so the first stop was a short 45-minute drive to Fasano to the cutest Bed and Breakfast I've ever seen. In Italian, they are called Masseria; my eyes couldn't believe the beauty of what I was seeing. Traveling with Sophie was fantastic. She made me see things and appreciate those single details I would not have seen before.

My senses were going crazy. The smell of the place between wet stone and grass, the color of the flowers, the sound of the gravel when we parked the car, and the intense heat and cold breeze, were just magic.

We had a fantastic lunch, and then we let ourselves go and live the dream. The colors of the pool, the lemon trees, the intense sunshine, and the Italian rosé made the most of our first day of the trip.

Then we got ready to have dinner in the world's most impressive cave. "La Grotta palace." The famous restaurant at Polignano a Mare. I could cry when I saw the view, we both couldn't stop screaming with happiness, taking pictures, posting, and just having tears of joy. We arrived at paradise and were grateful, happy, and present.

Then after the most fantastic dinner of our lives, we went for drinks at a charming bar down the center, and we finished the night with some amazing cocktails.

The dream was starting, and it did not finish there.

The next day we headed down to Ostuni; we arrived to another beautiful Masseria #Masserialecarube. There we had the most beautiful and delicate "Easter Lunch".

We couldn't believe our eyes. The presentation, the setting of the tables, the environment, everything covered in white. Was this real? We were having goosebumps per second from the beauty of the place.

On the third day, after a morning run and visiting the center of #Ostuni, we headed to another beautiful and unforgettable place ruled out by women #Masseriapotenti. We arrived at the site of our dream honeymoon.

The energy that place had was authentic, intense with character, very well organized, and with a fantastic vintage shop. What else? We were just stunned! We had two wonderful dinners in a beautiful dining hall. And the beauty of that place was in every single detail.

Every corner had something you could admire and stay staring at; it was perfect. The red carpets with white walls and the colorful flowers on every white dining hall table were just gorgeous.

We were delighted with the food and wine. That area is famous for producing Rosè from Salento and the most delicious Primitivo wines.

After seven days of road trip going around the hill of the superb Italian hill's boot, we remained touched by the beauty of that region of Italy. We were glad we headed on that adventure, and until now, we recall the memories of the food, the views, and the most glorious wines.
